Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

Like all operating systems, Mac OS X hides many configuration options under its hood, which may be difficult to find, especially for beginners. If you wish to make a few tweaks to the Finder, Dock or other components, without searching "how to..." on Google, OnyX can help you. This lightweight application includes many useful options for all sorts of system tweaks, from startup disk verification to making subtle changes in the Finder. You can also use OnyX to remote temporary files and other junk data from your disk.

When launched, the application will display nothing more than a toolbar. Selecting its options will show different menus, with numerous controls. Each menu contains a certain options category. For example, you can find options for verifying your disk's SMART status, structure of volume and the currently set preferences on one menu and maintenance options for permissions and scripts on a different menu.

Cleanup options can be found on their own menu. They are organized on several tabs, according to what kind of files can be removed. All you have to do is click a series of check boxes, to set the application to remove unused fonts, logs, Internet cache files and other junk files that were created by the user or by the system itself. A feature for emptying the trash can be found as well. Although it seems trivial, you should know that OnyX is capable of deleting the files from the trash in a secure manner, to make them impossible to recover.

If you don't know how to show hidden files in Finder or make other fine adjustments, you can access the application's Parameters menu, where you can find a wide range of tweaking options. They give you the possibility of making numerous changes to Finder, the Dock, to QuickTime, Safari, iTunes and many other components.

Pros

OnyX provides a huge amount of options for all sorts of system tweaks or maintenance tasks. They are neatly organized on several menus, which can be accessed instantly.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. With its clean and efficient functionality, OnyX gives you a better control over your Mac.
